A place for children to learn

Giving children the opportunity to engage in natural play is an important building block in their education. The way they see the world and interact with it affects so many of their physical, mental and spiritual skills.

Each session begins with our Wild Earthlings acknowledgement of country, where we gather together and pay our respects to all First Nations people. During a play session, we follow the children's interests through the environment and develop the learning as we go. Each child is trusted and supported to use educator experiences or just the natural world around them. They may be provided tools, paint, clay, ropes, magnifying glasses, books, water play and a whole myriad of other resources to extend their learning.

Over the weeks, the children develop in their abilities and grasp concepts more strongly through the delivery of additional ideas to what they already know. They can take this learning at their own pace and can spend as little or as long as they like on one thing. You may find that your child spends the entire term finding a favourite rock to sit on, or they may never step on the same patch of Earth twice. Each child is individual, and here, they are given the space to express completely who they are.

What do we do in a play session?

Child led

Educator provocation

Educator provocation

The natural world is a place where every person feels, thinks, views something different. For us to truly see learning, we must give children the space, time and trust to explore and discover at their own pace.

The natural world has so many lessons. Not only are we aiming to instil in children how important ideas such as sustainability, reducing our impact and conserving the environment are, but we are trying to embed a real love and respect of the natural world they have.

As well as the natural world, we will be observing the children's interests and needs so that we may provide holistic activities that extend their skills each week. Natural, inviting activities such as clay, Indigenous perspectives, painting and many more ideas will be used in collaboration with the children and what they would like to learn.

Risky play

Risky play

When children are able to take considered risks, their development strengthens in so many ways. Using a saw or whittling knife may not seem like something children can do, but they'll surprise you with how competent they are. Climbing rocks and trees can also be a little scary for us to watch, but the physical, mental and spiritual benefits are far too important to ignore!
